The Patrol Division operates the Frontline Services Division and is the most visible part of our police agency. They are the first to arrive when help is required anywhere and anytime, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Five lieutenants act as Public Service Area Liaisions for each of the five Pubic Service Areas (PSA) in the city. Each PSA commander is given authority and responsibility for building partnerships, problem solving, and the implementation of COPPS (Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving) philosophy.

Communications Unit

The Communications Unit, also known as Dispatch, provides an essential link between the officers in the field and the community. Eighteen dispatchers and one supervisor provide 24 hour phone coverage. The dispatcher is often the first point of contact for the citizen during emergencies. The dispatcher's unique ability to simultaneously talk, type, and listen allows for the smooth and accurate transmission of information that results in a quick response.

K9 Unit

The K-9 Unit is comprised of six specially trained dogs and their handlers. The primary function of the K-9 Unit is to locate evidence and apprehend felony suspects. The dogs have also been trained in the detection of narcotics and the location of hidden articles of evidence.

Traffic Unit

The Traffic Unit consists of one sergeant, five police officers, three community service officers, and an administrative clerk. Traffic Officers are assigned to work at various locations in the city with an emphasis on preventing traffic collisions. The Traffic Unit handles major traffic collision investigations and conducts traffic enforcement activities where the numbers of collisions have been identified as a problem. The unit works with the State of California Office of Traffic Safety to conduct selective traffic enforcement programs and sobriety/ driver’s license checkpoints throughout the year. The goal of the Traffic Unit is to reduce the numbers of traffic related injuries, deaths and property loss while facilitating a safe driving environment in the City of Fairfield through education and enforcement.
