Appendix Chapter 1 of the California Fire Code (CFC) specifies that certain manufacturing, storage, construction, or other types of hazardous operations require special inspection and issue of fire permits. The Fairfield Fire Department administers the permit program under authority of the CFC and Office of the State Fire Marshal.
Operational Permits
There are two types of operational permits issued: Annual and temporary.
- Annual permits are required for businesses operating on a permanent basis, and are typically valid for one year from the date of issue, or until renewed or revoked. Examples of these types of operations are:
- Storage or handling of aerosol products
- Storage or use of compressed gases
- Storage, use, or dispensing of flammable or combustible liquids
- Storage or use of hazardous materials
- Open flames and candles in public assembly occupancies
- Temporary permits are issued for a prescribed period of time, usually not exceeding 180 days. Examples of temporary permits:
- Carnivals and fairs
- Use of fire hydrants and valves
- Temporary membrane structures, tents or canopies
- Open flame or torches
- Hot work exhibitions
Construction Permits
Construction permits are required for installation, repair, or modification to any automatic fire-extinguishing system, fire alarm and detection systems and related equipment, fire pumps, and standpipe systems. Examples of other required construction permits:
- Installation of stationary storage battery systems
- Installation, modification, repair or removal of flammable or combustible liquid pipeline or storage systems
- Installation of modification of private fire hydrants
